My mother and I have always had a difficult relationship. Though hard to accept, the truth we continue to ignore is that we do not understand each other. Instead of addressing what was wrong and trying to overcome our differences, over the years we chose to continue to view the world as if we were living on different planets.

Our old drag out, ugly arguments over nothing were known to grow into days of tension and despair.

Time and time again in our relationship, we avoided the elephant in the room.

By the time I had grown, I wasn’t certain I would ever return to my New England home, high on a majestic bluff, overlooking the ocean. The discord and sadness it brought to my soul were just too much.

So, it’s not surprising that our old patterns would once again emerge during a recent visit.

Reclaim What You Can

The difficult relationship between me and my mother had never been resolved. Over the years, we had both allowed our anger, pain, and sadness to rob us of the precious time we might have shared.

Now, I was back home helping my 88-year-old mother pack up all the many treasures she and my dad had collected over the years.

The home she and my dad created more than 65 years ago is being passed onto a new family.

A life well lived in this beautiful old house was soon to be a thing of the past. Years of memories that included family celebrations, marriages, raising children, and watching her only grandchild run outside and play with glee would soon be all that was left to her.

It was time to reclaim whatever I could; whatever was left of our wounded relationship.

Make Peace with Your Past

There’s no better time for deciding to let healing begin than the present moment you are in because time is so short and never guaranteed us.

The first thing I had to confront was my desire to run away from the pain.

Instead of letting all of the years of struggle between us dictate how I would act (or react) toward my mother during our time together – I had to decide to truly be in the moment.

I knew that for any healing to take place, I had to separate this moment from what had been and make peace with my past.

I needed to acquire a different perspective, and be willing to see this moment in time through my mother’s eyes…not just my own.

For healing to begin, I needed to understand what she was:

Thinking

Feeling

Experiencing

And so, we talked…

About the past

About hopes and dreams

About what the relationship was

About what the relationship could be

About “where do we go from here?”

Through conversation, I was able to see how difficult it is for my mother to accept the changes being forced upon her. To accept help from others. To accept that her heart is being ripped out at the prospect of leaving her beloved sanctuary.

We were opening communication channels that had been too long closed. We were making ourselves available to one another in a new way.

Move through the Healing

The ability to accept that a relationship is difficult is so important for successfully overcoming anger, guilt, and any other emotional burdens you may be carrying.

Being able to communicate your feelings and being willing to listen to how the other person feels is a great place to start. But it’s also important to move through the process no matter how uncomfortable things might get.

Don’t permit yourself an escape route just because the road gets too bumpy.

Don’t hide from the truth. Instead, tighten your seatbelt and face it head-on.

Don’t become stuck in that rut that you know will never change, spinning your wheels and getting nowhere.

Don’t focus on the past. Let go of it and choose where you want to go from here.

Move Forward in Healing

Maybe you realize, as I have, that it’s time to move forward.

If you’re dealing with a difficult relationship, consider what time it is.

It’s time to accept who you are.

It’s time to be okay with what is not.

It’s time to let go of unworthy expectations.

It’s time to overcome lingering disappointment.

I’m grateful to have had this time to grieve time lost with my mother. I’ve moved through the process to a place where I choose to celebrate what we have, love her without expectations, and honor one another as the women we are in this moment of our lives.

Where Will You Go From Here?

On New Year’s Day, I received an email full of gratitude and humility from a woman I did not know. I wondered if perhaps she contacted me by mistake, as she wanted to know how she could make a donation to my business, Healing Through Horses.

I let the effects of her note simmer overnight with a sense of curiosity (and perhaps a little confusion) and decided I would respond the following morning. The next day, I received another message requesting the same information.

Now I knew it couldn’t be a mistake!

When I reached her by phone, she shared that a dear woman, whom I was fortunate to have hosted at Healing Through Horses years previously, had crossed over before Christmas and had requested that her friends and family send donations to Healing Through Horses in lieu of flowers.

As my heart filled with emotions – sadness at her passing, joy for her return to the Creator, gratitude at her generosity – it took me a few minutes to wrap my head around her honoring of our long-ago relationship in such a beautiful way.

I was truly overwhelmed by this woman’s heartfelt gesture to support the horses and our work with women as one of her last wishes.

I walked outside to survey the herd with misty eyes, pondering how each of these animals effects so many lives on so many levels, over perhaps an entire lifetime. I felt my emotions bubbling over again in response to such a beautiful and bittersweet reminder of the legacy our gifts of kindness, support and companionship can create.

I was grateful for such a clear reminder of the ripple effect made possible through:

Each and every act of kindness

Always doing our best

Choosing to be in service to others

You and I have the power to change lives simply by giving and living in love.

It can take years to know the impact of our words and actions, if we ever even get the privilege of knowing, and I felt blessed to be so lucky on this particular day!

Your actions have the power to heal, inspiring someone to:

Take a courageous step forward

Change something in their life that is no longer feeding their soul

Refocus their energy on the positive

Create a magnificent next chapter in life

The horses and I had that effect on this sweet departed soul’s life. In turn, she is now having that effect on mine.

Isn’t that lovely?

I don’t know what changes the horses and I were able to help this woman to achieve. What I do know, is that I am filled with humility and gratitude for having the privilege of being in service to women, like her and like you, alongside the animals I love.

3 Healing Effects to Consider with Gratitude and Humility

1. You have something special, something unique to share, give and offer others.

2. You are a well of astounding power that is drawn upon by living in consciousness of your connectedness to others and moving in awareness as a conduit of Love.

3. Life is so very short, but filled with countless, precious opportunities to step forward in grace; to gift love and hope to those near to you who desperately need a word of encouragement or a gentle reminder that life can be magnificent regardless of circumstances. All it might take is a hug or a soft loving smile of reassurance – from YOU.

I think you’ll agree, we not only need each other – we benefit greatly from making ourselves available to one another!

Step into your grace and know you are here for a reason and the world is waiting for you to share your love, empower others, and create change through your gifts. You may or may not be rewarded with the knowledge of your impact on others – but rest assured, your impact is mighty – each and every day.

It’s incredibly humbling to be a part of women’s lives – for however long or brief a time they need – to move towards creating the life they desire and deserve. That’s why I have challenged myself for the coming year to make the most of every day and make this my year of action.

Will you allow me to challenge you?

Give what you can, do your best, forgive the rest.

Create.

Love.

Mend fences.

Move forward.

Celebrate the good in yourself and others.

Let the less-than-perfect stuff slide away.

Fight for good.

Fight for each other.

Let the Creator take care of the rest.

I hope to watch alongside you as the healing effects of gratitude and humility ripple through – and from – our lives to the world around us!

Are you ready to create more healthy ripple effects in your life, career, and destiny? If so, please don’t hesitate to reach out. The horses and I look forward to helping in any way that we can.
